Welcome to the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences. Our faculty's vision is to produce outstanding graduates capable of using Family and Consumer Sciences knowledge and skills to address societal issues to promote the well-being of individuals, families, and communities.

Accreditation

The Department of Family and Consumer Sciences is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences. (400 N Columbus Street, Suite 202, Alexandria, VA 22314, telephone 703-706-4600)

The Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) at the University of Tennessee is currently granted Accreditation status by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, 120 South Riverside Plaza, Suite 2190, Chicago, Illinois 60606-6995, 312/ 899-5400, www.eatrightpro.org/acend.

Department Scholarships

Amanda Alice Berry FCS Scholarship

The Amanda Alice Berry Memorial Home Economics Scholarship is awarded to a student who has been accepted for admission or are enrolled at the University of Tennessee at Martin. The applicant must be a Home Economics major, demonstrate academic performance, and have financial need.

B.E. Edwards FCS Scholarship

The B.E. Edwards Family and Consumer Science Scholarship is awarded to a sophomore, junior, or senior student from Wayne County with financial need. Must be a family and consumer science major. Sophomores must have 2.0 GPA, juniors 2.25 GPA and seniors 2.5 GPA.

Buford/Beatrice Irwin FCS Scholarship

The Buford/Beatrice Irwin Family Consumer Sciences Scholarship is awarded to a student majoring in Family and Consumer Sciences with financial need. Academics are to be considered.

Clarence Hillman Moody FCS Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to a student majoring in Family and Consumer Sciences with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. They must be from Carroll or Henry County. Need is considered.

Ellen Daniel FCS Scholarship

The Ellen Daniel Family and Consumer Scholarship is awarded to a student majoring in Family and Consumer Science. The applicant must have a financial need.

Fashion Merchandising Scholarship

The Fashion Merchandising Scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior student majoring in family and consumer sciences and a concentration in fashion merchandising with financial need. Must be a Tennessee resident and have a 2.6 GPA or above.

Feri Mahootchi Scholarship

The Feri Mahootchi Scholarship is awarded to a student majoring in family and consumer sciences. Two awards are made each year, one to an outstanding returning Family and Consumer Sciences student and one to an outstanding Dietetics student.

Fred & Marie Colvett FCS Scholarship

The Fred and Marie Colvett Family and Consumer Science Scholarship is awarded to a student with financial need majoring in Family and Consumer Sciences. First preference from Crockett County, then West Tennessee. Academics to be considered.

Golightly Foundation FCS Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to students majoring in Family and Consumer Sciences with a GPA of 2.5 or higher.

Mary B. Cavin FCS Student Scholarship

The Mary B. Cavin Family and Consumer Science Scholarship is awarded to a student currently enrolled/attending UTM, must be pursuing a major in Family and Consumer Sciences Department, should have financial need, and first preference shall go to a student who graduated from a Weakley County high school.

Mary Joe Larsen Scholarship

The Mary Joe Larsen Scholarship is awarded to a student majoring in Family and Consumer Sciences with financial need. Academics to be considered.

Mary Rachel Armstrong Scholarship

The Mary Rachel Armstrong Scholarship is awarded to a student majoring in family and consumer sciences. Academics to be considered.

New Salem Community Scholarship

The New Salem Community Scholarship is awarded to a sophomore, junior or senior from Weakley County with first preference to students from the New Salem Community.

Phi Upsilon Omicron Beta Sigma Scholarship

The Phi Upsilon Omicron Beta Sigma Chapter Scholarship is awarded to a student who is a Family and Consumer Science major with a 3.2 or above GPA and must be a TN resident.

Ray Michael Barnes Memorial Scholarship

The Ray Michael Barnes Memorial is awarded to a freshman or sophomore from West Tennessee majoring in Family and Consumer Science Child Development. The applicant must have a 3.2 GPA and financial need.

Rehabilitation Corporation FCS Scholarship

The Rehabilitation Corporation Scholarship is awarded to Tennessee students from a rural area with an agriculture background and the potential to succeed. Need to be considered. Must be a family and consumer sciences major.

West TN Young Farmers and Homemakers Dev Scholarship

The West Tennessee Young Farmers Scholarship is awarded to a student from West Tennessee majoring in family and consumer sciences with a 3.0 GPA or higher and with financial need. First preference to students with a farm background.

Facilities

Facilities for teaching and other activities of the academic program include modern classrooms, laboratories, and demonstration areas, most located in Gooch Hall. Laboratories are equipped with modern equipment, large work centers, and portable demonstration units to facilitate effective learning.

The Margaret Perry Children’s Center provides services for the enrichment of children, allows for the observation of young children, and provides practical experience for students working with children.
